Jacob Lower with family

Hi, I’m Jacob 👋

Almost fifteen years ago, a high school teacher sparked my interest in computer programming. That spark grew into a career I love—and a passion for teaching others to code.

I’ve served as a Director of Technology for 12 years, where I solve real problems with software and help teams ship useful tools. I also teach kids and adults—lately focusing on Scratch fundamentals and beginner-friendly AI programming projects that build confidence and curiosity.

I earned both my B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science at Western Illinois University. During graduate school I taught an undergraduate CS course for two semesters. When students shadow me, I don’t just have them watch—I include them in real projects so they can write code, get feedback, and see outcomes.

Outside of work, I’m a proud girl dad to three amazing daughters. They’ve taught me more about creativity, patience, and curiosity than any textbook ever could—and they remind me every day why making technology accessible and fun matters.

Teaching Approach

  • ✅ Build-first lessons (learn by doing)
  • 🧩 Concepts → small projects → reflection
  • 🎮 Scratch projects that feel like games
  • 🤖 Friendly AI intros without heavy math

Why I teach

I want students to discover that programming is a creative tool they can use to solve problems they care about—today. Whether it’s a Scratch game, a tiny website, or a first AI experiment, shipping something real builds momentum. And as a dad of three girls, I want them—and every kid—to know they belong in tech.
